Dear Friend,

It was wonderful to see so many members of our community at last week’s Defenders of Justice Awards. We honored six outstanding North Carolinians who have spent their lives working for a better, more equitable state. I was inspired by the sentiments the awardees shared—by their determination, resilience, and unwavering commitment to all people in our state. The evening was a testament to this work for social justice and the importance of uniting behind shared values to create change.

Please enjoy the photos shared below. If you couldn’t join us, I hope you will consider attending next year’s DOJ or any of our upcoming events. Your belief in and dedication to the NC Justice Center’s work are so important in this moment. Thank you for walking alongside us as we work for a state where all people can thrive.

In solidarity,

Reggie Shuford
Executive Director

The Cost of Inaction—2024 State of Working North Carolina

On August 29, the NC Justice Center’s Workers’ Rights team released “The Cost of Inaction—2024 State of Working North Carolina.” This interactive report tallies a staggering amount of economic losses—tens of billions of dollars yearly—due to lawmakers’ failure to act on wages, paid leave, childcare and elder care funding, and unemployment insurance improvements. Learn more about the costs of neglecting North Carolina workers’ needs by reading the full report.

Workers' Rights Briefing and Care Can't Wait Bus Tour

NC Justice Center Workers’ Rights Co-Director Ana Pardo and Health Advocacy Director Nicole Dozier attended the North Carolina stop on the Care Can’t Wait coalition’s bus tour. During the event, organized by Mom’s Rising in Apex on August 30, advocates came together to celebrate caregiving, collective power, and urge action on issues impacting families, from paid leave to early learning to home- and community-based services. Ana Pardo shared findings from the 2024 State of Working NC report, which covers how strong workplace policies benefit working people, families, and the economy. You can learn more about the report’s findings at the 2024 State of Working North Carolina—The Cost of Inaction briefing on Wednesday, October 23, at 12 p.m.
