January 2024

Dear Friend,

Perhaps January brings a renewed commitment to personal and professional goals or—if you are like me—the beginning of a new year finds you wishing for sunshine and warmer weather. I think it’s fitting that only a few weeks after we made annual resolutions to improve ourselves as individuals, we paused on January 15th to recognize the accomplishments of the great civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose leadership spurred one of the most significant movements of collective action in the 20th century.

My favorite quote from Dr. King is, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Dr. King’s legacy reminds us that harnessing the power of collective action is necessary to achieve liberation and equality. Our commitment to the work we do together over months, years, and decades—work often filled with painfully slow, incremental progress—is what creates lasting change. But it is up to each of us to nudge that arc in the right direction.

As we begin a critical election year, we are grateful for your continued partnership to make North Carolina more equitable for all our neighbors and for your help to bend our state’s arc toward justice.

Warmly,
Reggie Shuford, Executive Director
