April 2023

On April 21, 2023, the NC Justice Center and The Athlete's Foot hosted a three-hour symposium designed to bring together engaged North Carolina residents, directly impacted people, and North Carolina business leaders.

The symposium provided background information on the state of employment for justice-involved people in North Carolina, sharing how more than 1.2 million North Carolinians have had some contact with the criminal justice system. This was followed by a fireside chat during which panelists discussed how our workforce would benefit from second chance reforms and what can be done to combat the barriers to employment for justice-involved people

Employers who have implemented fair chance hiring practices in their businesses offered advice to others who are interested in becoming second-chance employers. Attendees learned about efforts like

record expungement, driver’s license restoration, and mugshot reform can reduce barriers to employment for justice-impacted people.

Closing remarks were given by NC Justice Center Executive Director Reggie Shuford and Whitley Carpenter, Senior Criminal Justice Counsel at Forward Justice. They urged all advocates, allies, and directly impacted citizens to work together, taking bold action to make North Carolina a more just state.

2023 Wake County Expunction Clinic

On February 25, 2023, the Fair Chance Criminal Justice team partnered with Campbell Law School’s Blanchard Community Law Clinic and StepUp Ministry to host a free expunction clinic for Wake County residents. Campbell University Law and its supervising attorneys worked with clients to expunge charges from their criminal records, a significant victory that will open up opportunities for stable employment, housing, and more. Clients sat down with NC Justice Center staff for a short interview, during which they shared why North Carolina needs fair chance policies and how fair chance initiatives would impact their lives. During the clinic, 45 clients signed up to begin the process of having their records expunged.

Join us tomorrow for Workers Memorial Day

The NC Justice Center is hosting a press conference and solemn memorial service in partnership with NC AFL-CIO, the North Carolina A. Philip Randolph Institute, and the North Carolina Council of Churches at 10 AM on Friday, April 28, at the North Carolina State Capitol. During the service, participants will toll a bell 179 times — once for each person in North Carolina who died while working for a better life in 2021. We request attendees wear black to honor the dead.

Second Chance Lobby Day

The Second Chance Alliance, a coalition of organizations, allies and impacted citizens of which the NC Justice Center is a member, is honoring criminal justice reform and voting rights champions in North Carolina and will be hosting a semi-formal gala on the evening of May 2 to uplift individuals who have been steadfast in the movement. Second Chance Lobby Day is a time for all who believe in second chances to come together to speak to our lawmakers about the criminal justice and reentry issues that are impacting our communities.
